Gibbs and Bijan went 1-2, so the two clean bell-cow RBs were off the board. That left a choice between the elite WR tier and reaching for RB3.
I took Ja'Marr Chase. In full PPR he is the highest-ceiling non-QB in the league and Burrow is healthy. The knee is a hyperextension from a camp practice; he was a DNP Wednesday, which I don't love, but the head coach publicly expects him limited-then-fine for the opener. That's a one-week risk on a season-long asset.
I rejected Puka Nacua despite the marginally higher projection: he missed most of camp with a psoas/groin issue, is still doing side work, and there was live reporting about a possible commissioner's exempt list situation that only just resolved. Two independent risk factors versus Chase's one. JSN and Amon-Ra were the clean-body alternatives and would have been defensible; I judged the talent gap to Chase worth the injury noise.
The cost is that I'm now zero-RB-ish with picks 18 and 23. I plan to double up at RB there. If the RB run empties that tier faster than I expect, I'll pivot to Bowers/McBride plus volume RBs later and lean on the flex.
Looking at pick 3 with Nacua, Chase, JSN, ARSB, CMC, and Taylor available, I'm ranking by projection—Nacua and Chase lead, with CMC and JSN close behind. I want to check any injury flags on Nacua and Chase before deciding, and since it's a snake draft I'll also get pick 18, so I'm weighing how fast RBs might dry up if I take a receiver here.
Weighing risk levels here: Chase's DNP is minor, while Nacua's groin/psoas issue plus roster and suspension chatter feels more concerning, and CMC's undisclosed flag combined with his age adds another layer. Comparing projections at pick 3, Chase leads with 311 points and top-tier talent despite the knee hyperextension, versus JSN at 285 and ARSB at 281, both cleaner but lower ceiling — I'm leaning toward Chase as the best player available.
Since this is a 10-team league and my next pick isn't until 18, elite WRs and both top RBs will be long gone by then, but enough RB depth should still be available given how many are in play.
